This Just In

Sept 2, 2010

New Trier township resident Richard Kiphart called on his old friend Bono, lead singer for U2, to appear on the cover of Lyric Opera of Chicago's Operathon 2010 catalog. Kiphart met Bono in 2004 when he was asked to join the board of the rock star/humanitarian's advocacy group, Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa (DATA). The two worked together and met with legislators in Washington to discuss AIDS and other issues of import to Africa. Kiphart, a Winnetka resident, is president and CEO of Lyric Opera of Chicago. When U2 performed in Chicago last summer, Bono agreed to be photographed for Lyric Opera’s 31st annual Operathon fundraiser catalog cover, at Kiphart’s request. Operathon 2010 takes place on Sat., Oct. 16, between 8 a.m. and midnight. 98.7WFMT will broadcast live from the Civic Opera House that day and night, interspersing historical and contemporary musical selections by Lyric artists with interviews from the current season, as well as Lyric staff and board members. Lyric’s OperaShop is open online 24/7 at www.lyricopera.org.
